"summary": "**1st in the UK for our research impact in Sociology in REF 2021 (Times Higher Education)**\n\n**8th in the UK for Sociology (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023)**\n\nSussex is an exciting place to pursue a PhD in Criminology. We’re an active, research-intensive team of criminologists, and our work is influencing public and policy debates worldwide. Our faculty have specific expertise in:\n\n\n- policing\n\n\n- crime and violence\n\n\n- drugs, alcohol and crime\n\n\n- gender and crime\n\n\n- criminological theory\n\n\n- hate crime\n\n\n- terrorism and extremism\n\n\n- technology and crime\n\n\n- surveillance\n\n\n- crime and public policy\n\n\n- prisons and punishment\n\n\n- historical criminology\n\n\n- race and criminal justice.\n\n\nWe understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision.
