"summary": "Anaesthetists and intensive care doctors provide care to a broad spectrum of people - from completely healthy people having minor surgery, through to people with life-threatening injuries and illnesses.\n\nAlthough major advances have been made resulting in much improved outcomes, we know that overall in-hospital mortality after surgery is still around 3.5%. Our research is focussed on addressing ways of addressing this:\n\n\n- improving our understanding of how the lungs, circulation and kidneys work in critical illness\n\n\n- clinical studies investigating new ways of caring for elderly patients with hip fracture\n\n\n- understanding and improving the safety of healthcare delivery in the peri-operative period. \n\n\nCore research themes/topics include:\n\npatient safety\ncomputational modelling\nhip fracture\nultrasound guided regional anaesthesia\nvascular biology\nacute kidney injury ",
