"summary": "**8th in the UK for our research outputs in Communications, Cultural and Media Studies in REF 2021 (Times Higher Education)\n16th in the UK for Communication and Media Studies (Complete University Guide 2025)**\n\nThe rapid development and distribution of digital media technologies in so many aspects of everyday life raises new research questions. Specialist methods and approaches are needed to understand the transformations in everyday life and social worlds. Exploring these questions in your PhD, you’ll work with expert faculty guiding and supervising you throughout your research project.\n\nYou have the opportunity to participate in the Sussex Humanities Lab, which is dedicated to developing and expanding interdisciplinary research at the cutting edge of digital humanities and digital media. \n\nWe welcome research proposals in areas such as:\n\n\n- critical theory\n\n\n- technology\n\n\n- digital humanities\n\n\n- computational media\n\n\n- the political economy of computation\n\n\n- software and algorithm studies\n\n\n- philosophy of media\n\n\nProjects can be co-supervised by faculty in another school as appropriate.\n\nWe understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision. We’ll make all reasonable efforts to provide you with the courses, services and facilities described in this prospectus.
