Some research areas in the school include:\n\n\n- Evolutionary biology of spiders and spider silk\n\n\n- Computational molecular evolution\n\n\n- Phylogenomics, protein evolution, evolutionary theory, and adaptation.\n\n\n- Colour polymorphism and speciation in snails\n\n\n- Evolutionary and population genomics of adaptation in plants\n\n\n- Evolution of sparrow-human commensalism\n\n\n- Ladybird colour polymorphism and male killers\n\n\n- Ecology and evolution in three-spined sticklebacks\n\n\n- Evolution and development of left-right asymmetry\n\n\n**Animal Behaviour**\n\nResearch projects in this area will centre on adaptive decision-making in animals in a range of contexts, including:\n\n\n- Trade-offs between social and sexual behaviour, learning and other components of life history, such as immune function and disease resistance\n\n\n- Associative and higher order learning in invertebrates\n\n\n- Evolution of insect pollinator systems\n\n\n- How predators drive the evolution of colour patterns and mimicry\n\n\n**Conservation Biology**\n\nResearch projects in this area are likely to either involve intensive field work, laboratory experiments, or data analysis/mathematical modelling.\n\nRecent work within the school has been concerned with:\n\n\n- Population genetics and conservation of the endangered fen raft spider\n\n\n- Social Insect Biology and Conservation\n\n\n- Impact of habitat fragmentation on conservation\n\n\n- Harvest mice conservation\n\n\n- Speciation and conservation of snails on remote Japanese archipelago, the Ogasawara islands\n\n\n- Conservation ecology of declining vertebrate populations (especially birds)\n\n\n**Ecology**\n\nResearch projects in ecology are offered in a range of animal, plant and microbial topics including:\n\n\n- Competition and coexistence in animal communities\n\n\n- Ecology of host-parasite interactions\n\n\n- Insect pollinator systems\n\n\n- Life history strategies and trade-offs\n\n\n- Sexual selection and ecology\n\n\n- Role of ecology in natural selection\n\n\n- Chemical ecology of neurotoxins\n\n\n- Bumblebee and spider ecology\n\n\n- Aquatic environments and disease ecology\n\n\n- Role of exuberant colour polymorphism in snail shells\n\n\n**Evolutionary Ecology**\n\nEvolutionary ecology lies at the intersection of ecology and evolutionary biology, typically taking into account interactions between species. Studies available include:\n\n\n- The evolutionary and behavioural ecology of insects and mammals\n\n\n- Ecological genetics of sibling species of snail\n\n\n- Sexual selection and ecology of birds\n\n\n- Co-evolution of life histories and mimicry in insects\n\n\n- Stickleback evolutionary ecology and parasitism\n\n\n- Mimicry and colour polymorphism in invertebrates\n\n\n- Host-parasite coevolution in freshwater systems\n",
