"summary": "Our research and associated education and engagement are in two broad themes – Food System Transformation and Healthy People, Healthy Planet. We especially focus on the interactions between the two.\n\nImproving the effectiveness and sustainability of agri-food systems is vital to tackling the challenges of:\n\n\n- global population growth\n\n\n- rapid urbanisation\n\n\n- food and environmental security\n\n\n- diet and health\n\n\nThese challenges occur in low- and middle-income countries, as well as in more industrialised nations.\n\nAchieving sustainable, healthy diets underpins many of the Sustainable Development Goals – especially those concerned with:\n\n\n- hunger\n\n\n- poverty\n\n\n- health\n\n\n- gender equality\n\n\n- responsible consumption and production\n\n\n- climate action\n\n\nWe welcome applicants whose research interests are aligned to address one or more of these challenges, and who hold the potential to develop and translate scientific advances into policy and practice.\n\nMost of our research is interdisciplinary in its approach, and we collaborate with Schools and groups across the University of Edinburgh, and with a wide range of national and international partners.\n\nOur current specific expertise spans:\n\n\n- nutrition and health of humans, livestock, crops and soils\n\n\n- environmental and agri-food systems\n\n\n- crop and livestock production systems\n\n\n- climate smart agriculture\n\n\n- agricultural and natural resource economics\n\n\n- development\n\n\n- data science and mathematical modelling\n\n\n- the science-policy interface\n\n\n- food and land rights and law\n\n\nWe welcome applicants with interests in these areas.
