"summary": "**1st in the world for Development Studies (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025)**\n\n**3rd in the UK for our research impact in Geography and Environmental Studies in REF 2021 (Times Higher Education)**\n\n**10th in the UK for Social Sciences (The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2025)**\n\n**About the course**\n\nFood is a cross-cutting development issue that concerns hunger, food insecurity, malnutrition, environment sustainability, power politics, social justice and cultural identity. It is about the global and the local, and the hard trade-offs that the globalisation era has brought about.\n\nThis MA draws on wide-ranging expertise of faculty at both IDS and School of Global Studies at Sussex (where you’ll be based).\n\nYou’ll gain an advanced understanding of the complex relationship between food and development. We build your analytical and practical skills, improving your ability to engage critically with issues such as:\n\n-food and nutrition security\n-sustainable food systems\n-value chains and corporate power\n-agri-food technology and its contestations.\n\n**About Sussex**\n\nOur courses, research, culture and campus aim to stimulate, excite and challenge.
