This research programme is currently developing novel treatments for viral hepatitis and emerging viruses.\n\nWe are part of the OneVirology network that unites human and animal virologists across campus.\n\nWe have access to facilities to handle human pathogens up to containment level 3.\n\nCurrent research in the school includes:\n\n\n- The molecular biology of virus replication\n\n\n- Understanding virus-host interactions at the molecular level\n\n\n- Mechanisms and molecular biology of virus entry\n\n\n- Understanding the innate immune response to viral infection\n\n\n- Understanding the role of humoral immunity in preventing virus infection\n\n\n- Developing novel tissue engineering models of viral pathogenesis\n\n\n- Pathology, natural history and treatment of persistent viral infections\n\n\n- Clinical virology of acute and persistent viral infections\n\n\n- Developing novel anti-viral interventions\n\n\nWithin these areas, we have particular interest and expertise in:\n\n\n- Coronaviruses\n\n\n- Hepatitis C virus\n\n\n- Human immunodeficiency virus\n\n\n- Zoonotic viral infections\n\n\n- Emerging human viruses\n\n\n- Animal viruses, in collaboration with members in the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science\n\n\n**Parasitology**\n\nWe work on understanding the biology of the major parasites of both humans and animals.\n\nOf particular interest is gaining an understanding of immunity and the contribution of genetics to host susceptibility and parasite immune evasion strategies. These core interests underpin the search for novel immunotherapies for the major tropical diseases including:\n\n\n- gastrointestinal nematodes\n\n\n- filariasis\n\n\n- malaria\n\n\n- trypanosomiasis\n\n\n- schistosomiasis.\n\n\n**Microbiology**\n\nIn the microbiology research group we are researching novel strategies to fight against infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. We are doing this by understanding the molecular mechanisms used by microbes to cause disease and how the host immunity works to defence the host against them.\n\nWe are working on a range of organisms with high relevance in the clinic. Some of our areas of interest are:\n\n\n- Bacterial signalling including quorum sensing\n\n\n- Effector proteins\n\n\n- Virulence\n\n\n- Biofilms\n\n\n- Predatory bacteria that eat pathogens and the discovery of novel anti-infective agents\n",
