In the 'Additional optional' lists, students can only take up to two of the modules in each list. \n\nHere is a sample of optional modules that may be offered. \n\n- Critical Systems Engineering \n- Data Ethics and Privacy \n- Data-Intensive Systems \n- Human Computer Interaction Principles and Methods \n- Information Visualisation\n- Interactive Software and Hardware \n- Knowledge Discovery and Datamining \n- Principles of Computer Communication Systems \n- Software Architecture \n- Software Engineering Practice \n- Software Engineering Principles \n- User-Centred Interaction Design\n\nAdditional optional modules: \n\nStudents may take up to two of the following:\n\n- Advanced Communication Networks and Systems \n- Computer Architecture\n- Computer Graphics \n- Computer Security \n- Concurrency and Multi-Core Architectures\n- Distributed Systems \n- Logic and Software Verification\n- Programming Language Design and Implementation \n- Signal Processing: Sound, Image, Video \n- Video Games \n\nStudents may take up to two of the following:\n\n- Database Management Systems \n- Information Security Management \n- Web Technologies\n\nDissertation Project:\n\nDuring the second semester, students work with staff to define and agree upon a topic for the extended project, which they will work on during the final three months of the course, and which finishes in a 15,000-word dissertation. Dissertation projects may be group-based or completed individually (students are assessed individually in either case). \n\nThe dissertation typically comprises: \n\n- a review of related work \n- the extension of existing ideas or the development of new ideas \n- software implementation and testing \n- analysis and evaluation. \n\nStudents are required to give a presentation of their work in addition to the written dissertation. \n\nEach project is supervised by one or two members of staff, typically through regular meetings and reviews of software and dissertation drafts. \n\nIf students choose not to complete the dissertation requirement for the MSc, there is an exit award available that allows suitably qualified candidates to receive a Postgraduate Diploma instead, finishing the course at the end of the second semester of study.",
