"summary": "The combination of English and history uniquely positions you to interrogate a variety of literary texts and place them within their historical, social and political contexts. Both subjects offer modules that explore literary and historical cultures, from the medieval period up until the contemporary moment.\n\n**Hone your ability to analyse diverse texts, media and events from across the globe and gain a deeper understanding of where they sit in history.**\n\nThe combination of English and history is a natural one. To understand how English literature and language have changed, developed and influenced cultures, you need to explore the historical context in which they were created. Literary texts can also provide important insights that help us create a clearer picture of life in earlier periods of history.\n\nSplitting your time between English and history, you’ll have the opportunity to pursue either an English literature or an English language pathway - or even take modules from both areas, studying a range of genres from literary fiction, journalism, theatre, film, everyday conversation, adverts, digital writing, to poetry and creative writing.\n\nHistory is an imaginative process; it requires us to appreciate things from points of view that are often very different.
