"summary": "**95% of our research overall in Mathematical Sciences was assessed to be world leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021)** \n\n**About the course**\n\nMachine learning and data science are all around us. The need for people who can collate and interpret complex data has never been greater. This course will give you the skills to solve data-intensive problems.\n\nYou’ll explore the relationships between mathematics, data and statistics and gain a thorough grounding in theories and techniques. You’ll apply mathematical algorithms for the analysis, interpretation and visualisation of large data-sets, using real-world data.\n\nIn your mathematics modules you’ll learn the theory that forms the basis of modern data science. You’ll put this theory into practice in your data science modules. All modules are based on the latest research. Our faculty are experts in this exciting field. Their research is having significant impact in areas such as:\n\n\n- smart materials\n\n\n- artificial intelligence\n\n\n- social networks\n\n\n- infectious disease control.\n\n\nYou’ll develop your analytical and modelling skills, using industry-standard software such as Python and R.\n\nBy graduation you’ll have gained the skills, and confidence, to become a capable quantitative scientist. Career options include roles in:\n\n\n- the financial services\n\n\n- information and digital technology\n\n\n- research.\n\n\nYou’ll be part of a close-knit, friendly department. Our lecturers take the time to get to know you. They operate an open-door policy, so you’ll always find support if you need it.\n\n**Accreditation**\n\nThis programme will meet the educational requirements of the Chartered Mathematician designation, awarded by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, when it is followed by subsequent training and experience in employment to obtain equivalent competences to those specified by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for taught masters degrees.\n\n**MMath or BSc?**\n\nWe also offer this course as a four-year MMath, or as a four-year MMath with research placements.\n\n**Location**\n\nStudy on our beautiful, green campus on the edge of the South Downs National Park and just minutes from the vibrant seaside city of Brighton & Hove.
