"summary": "Our Biotechnology and Biodesign MRes provides a foundation into how design and engineering approaches are used in the creation of new biotechnological processes and products.\n\n**About this course**\nAdvances in biotechnology, computing, and laboratory automation are being coupled with design thinking approaches to engineer biological systems that may produce more sustainable products than traditional manufacturing. Examples include:\nthe production of synthetic meat substitutes\ndairy-free milk\nadaptive building materials\npetroleum-replacement products\ndesigner antimicrobial compounds\nsmart drug delivery systems\n\nOur Biotechnology and Biodesign MRes:\n\nprovides a foundation in design thinking approaches\ncovers recent developments in applied biotechnology\nprovides an opportunity to develop and refine your laboratory skills\nprovides the opportunity to develop your own research project\nThe training forms an excellent foundation for students opting to follow a research orientated career path and for those looking for successful careers in the biotechnology industry.\n\nThe course is interdisciplinary. You'll be suitable for this course if you are:\na science graduate\nlooking to develop your knowledge and research skills\n\nYou'll gain the skills allowing you to address critical global challenges in:\nsustainability\nfood security\nthe environment\nhealthcare\n\n**What you'll learn**\nThroughout the course, you will gain an advanced understanding of:\nscientific concepts and practices that underpin industrial biotechnology\nprinciples of design thinking and project design\nscientific concepts of the role of recombinant DNA technology in both fundamental research and applied technology \nthe role of microorganisms in the search and discovery of commercially significant natural products \nthe role of biotechnology in agriculture and commercial enterprise\ncontrol and modelling concepts and their application in bioprocessing systems\nstatistical concepts and theory and their application in process engineering\nadvanced practical skills in molecular biological techniques, handling microorganisms and data analysis\n\n**Your development**\nYou will cover the foundational principles of design thinking in the context of biodesign. You will also develop skills in:\nhandling microorganisms and plants\nmolecular biology techniques\ndata analysis\npreparation of research proposals and product pitches\nlaboratory automation\n\nDuring the MRes, you will be based within the Centre for Biological Systems Engineering and the Plant and Microbial Biology research group. You’ll participate in research group meetings and the seminar programme within the School. The group has a large cohort of PhD students, allowing you to experience a research-intensive study environment.\n\nNewcastle University has long-standing and successful participation in the iGEM competition, dating from 2008. Team members are drawn from a range of undergraduate and Master’s programmes. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills further through:\nCollaborative working with research groups within the University\nCollaboration with local biotechnology companies and university spin-outs\nField trips to local biotechnology firms.",
