This is the case for all applicants, including UK nationals. You can meet our English language requirements with qualifications from school or an English language test. "summary": "Many of the basic concepts underlying Western society were expressed for the first time in Ancient Greek or Latin. Together with English, they are the languages of many highly influential literary works.\n\nOur joint honours programme aims to develop your critical, analytic, linguistic, and creative skills by engaging with a broad range of texts and a variety of approaches to reading.\n\nFor English Literature, you will explore the cultural contexts of writing in English from the late Middle Ages to the present. For Classics, you will explore highly influential scholarship and literature of the classical world. You will take either an Ancient Greek, Latin or non-language pathway through Classics.\n\nIn this way, studying English Literature and Classics helps us understand the contemporary world as well as the past.\n\n**Why Edinburgh**\n\nEdinburgh is a remarkable place to study, write, publish, discuss and perform prose, poetry and drama alongside Classics.\n\nWe are the oldest department of English and Scottish Literature in the UK, one of the longest-established in the world.\n\nFrom the University's Special Collections to the National Library of Scotland, the city's resources for studying literature and classics are exceptional.\n\nOur programme prepares you to contribute to a society in which an understanding of texts of all kinds is crucially important. It shows an openness to ideas and perspectives other than your own, an essential attribute in many careers and a global marketplace.\n\n**How long it takes to complete this degree programme**\n\nThis programme is studied over 4 years. This enables us to build choice and flexibility into your studies, giving you time to explore options, find what you like and build your skills.\n\nYour first two years will be your pre-honours years.
