This is the case for all applicants, including UK nationals. You can meet our English language requirements with qualifications from school or an English language test. We accept any of the following, at the specified grade or higher: SQA National 5: English at C;\nGCSE: English at C or 4; Level 2 Certificate: English at C; International Baccalaureate (IB) Standard Level: English at 5 (English ab initio is not accepted for entry). "summary": "This joint programme gives you in-depth knowledge of Philosophy and English Literature.\n\nIn Years 1 and 2, you will take courses that introduce you to each subject area, and choose options from a range of disciplines.\n\nAt honours level (Years 3 and 4), you will select courses based on your interests so you can specialise in particular topics.\n\nCombining literature with philosophy shows an openness to different ideas and perspectives which is valuable in many careers and the wider world.\n\n**Philosophy**\n\nPhilosophy has been at the core of Western intellectual life for at least 2,500 years. It is central to our understanding of the world and our interaction with it.\n\nPhilosophy gives you the skills to think about great philosophical questions in a clear and systematic way.\n\nWhile there are different approaches that philosophers have taken, the study of philosophy focuses on:\n\n\n* argument\n\n\n* critical enquiry\n\n\n* rigour in reasoning\n\n\n* clarity of expression, including making important distinctions\n\n\n**English Literature**\n\nEdinburgh is the first UNESCO World City of Literature. For centuries, it has been the home and muse of many great writers.\n\nOn this programme, you will develop your critical and creative skills by engaging with a broad range of texts from around the world and a variety of approaches to reading.\n\nYou will explore the cultural contexts of writing in English from the late Middle Ages to the present, and many different topics and genres.\n\nFrom the University's Special Collections to the National Library of Scotland, the city's resources for studying literature are exceptional.\n\n**Programme benefits**\n\n\n* Philosophy has been taught at the University since its foundation in 1583.
