"summary": "Our PhD/MPhil Cardiovascular Sciences programme enables you to undertake a research project that will improve understanding of Cardiovascular Sciences.\n\nCardiovascular diseases are major causes of mortality and morbidity in developed and developing countries worldwide.\n\nOur research spans five main themes:\n\n\n- cardiovascular genetics and development;\n\n\n- experimental cardiology;\n\n\n- vascular biology/hypertension;\n\n\n- stroke;\n\n\n- clinical cardiovascular research;\n\n\nWe adopt an integrated 'bench-to-bedside' translational approach for understanding the underlying mechanisms responsible for the functioning of the cardiovascular system in both health and disease.\n\nTo this end, there is a wide spectrum of research spanning clinical trials, small and large animal models of cardiovascular diseases, whole organs and tissues, cells and single molecule studies. Working together in purpose-built facilities provides for a stimulating and cutting-edge environment.\n\nExamples of research programmes include:\n\n\n- cardiac and vascular electrophysiology;\n\n\n- cardiac conduction system;\n\n\n- calcium and second messenger signalling in the heart and vasculature;\n\n\n- heart failure and arrhythmias;\n\n\n- hypertrophic signalling pathways in the heart;\n\n\n- cardiovascular genetics and development;\n\n\n- cellular and protein structure;\n\n\n- comparative biology and mitochondrial function;\n\n\n- computer modelling;\n\n\n- hypertension, obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes research;\n\n\n- vascular biology of small and large arteries;\n\n\n- angiogenesis and endothelial biology;\n\n\n- stroke;\n\n\n- cardiovascular imaging;\n\n\n- induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) models of cardiovascular disease;\n\n\n- cardiac and vascular regeneration;\n\n\n- renal physiology and genetics;\n\n\n- renal medicine;\n",
