"summary": "**Discover how the human body works in health and disease. You'll learn to diagnose and fight diseases in our specialist labs on this biomedical science degree.**\n\n**Prepare for a career in public health**\nWith a degree in biomedical science, you can be part of the fight against critical public health issues such as cancer. The work of biomedical scientists has been crucial in the detection of global viruses, including COVID-19. They’ve also played a key role in the development of vaccines and the testing and development of drugs. \n\n**Accredited study**\nThis industry-accredited degree will enable you to understand and explore advances in the field. This could include how biomedical science has helped in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of a variety of illnesses.\n\n**Choose your pathway**\nAt the end of your first year of study, you could choose to continue your multidisciplinary studies and gain a BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science. Alternatively, you could choose to study for a combined degree award by specialising in one of our specific pathways: \n\n**Medical Biochemistry Pathway**\n- Study biochemical interactions within the body, and the diagnosis of biochemically related diseases.\n\n**Medical Microbiology Pathway**\n- Study the types of pathogen that cause infectious disease, and the strategies they use to attack the body. You’ll learn how to diagnose disease and understand the treatments available. You’ll also look at the global burden of infectious disease and the worldwide initiatives underway to try and control this challenging threat.\n\n**Pharmacological Sciences Pathway**\n- Discover how different drugs are used for the treatment of diseases and what effect they have on the body. You’ll also develop your understanding of pharmacological principles and how they inform the development of drugs.\n\n**Molecular Biotechnology Pathway**\n- By looking at biological processes involving genetics and gene technology, you’ll learn about the molecular advances in the treatment of disease and how treatments are developed.\n\nWe also offer the BSc (Hons) Applied Biomedical Science course which you can apply for after your second year of study. If you're successful in your application for the applied route, you’ll complete a 45-week placement* in an NHS pathology laboratory after your second year. You’ll then return to the university to complete your final year, extending your duration of study to four years.\n\n**Hands-on experience**\nYou’ll gain valuable work experience and training during your placement enabling you to complete an IBMS registration portfolio while you study. When successfully completed and verified, your portfolio will enable you to apply for entry onto the HCPC register as a Biomedical Scientist after graduating. You’ll be able to do this without the need for further training. **Please note, placements may be limited so will be subject to availability**.\n\n**Your route into training**\nThis course is aligned to the criteria required to join the NHS Scientist Training Programme. The programme is a common route to becoming a clinical or healthcare scientist, so you’ll be prepared to pursue this option when you graduate.\n\n**Why study the BSc Biomedical Science course at Leeds Beckett University?**\n- Dual accreditation from both the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) and the Institute for Biomedical Science (IBMS) \n\n\n- Our degree is aligned to the criteria required to join the **NHS Scientist Training Programme**\n\n\n- You'll study in our specialist Biomedical Sciences Laboratories where you can master specialist testing equipment and familiarise yourself with the latest data and AV technology, microbiology facilities, and cell culture suites\n\n\n- 95% of students on BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences were positive about the way teaching staff explain things*\n\n\n- 90.9% of graduates in work or further study 15 months after graduation**\n\n\nNational Student Survey 2025*\nPercentage of respondents from this course, HESA Graduate Outcomes 22-23**",
