"furtherInformation": "You must prove that you can read, write, listen and speak in the English language at a level that will allow you to succeed in your studies. This is the case for all applicants, including UK nationals. You can meet our English language requirements with qualifications from school or an English language test. We accept any of the following, at the specified grade or higher: SQA National 5: English at C;\nGCSE: English at C or 4; Level 2 Certificate: English at C; International Baccalaureate (IB) Standard Level: English at 5 (English ab initio is not accepted for entry). "summary": "As the world’s second most widely spoken language, Mandarin Chinese and its associated cultures have helped to shape the contemporary world in many ways.\n\nThis joint honours programme gives you the opportunity to learn Modern Standard Chinese and explore Chinese studies while developing your social scientific understanding of language.\n\nChinese and Linguistics make an excellent joint honours choice by combining the study of:\n\n\n* a language in its cultural, historical and political context\n\n\n* the expression and creation of meaning\n\n\nOn our programme, Linguistics options of particular relevance to language students cover:\n\n\n* sociolinguistics - the relationship between language and society\n\n\n* variation in the languages of the world\n\n\n* first and second languages acquisition\n\n\n* Global Englishes\n\n\n**Chinese**\n\nEdinburgh is the only university in the UK to offer three different language entry levels to our Chinese degree programmes:\n\n\n* ab initio - for complete beginners in the Chinese language\n\n\n* upper beginner\n\n\n* intermediate\n\n\nOur programme is not for native speakers, but we also welcome heritage language learners.\n\nStudy with us, and you will develop advanced competency in Modern Standard Chinese. This enables us to build choice and flexibility into your studies, giving you time to explore options, find what you like and build your skills.\n\nYour first two years will be your pre-honours years. They will give you a good grounding in the Chinese language and in the study of China and of linguistics. In addition to your core courses, you will broaden your education and skill set by choosing option courses from a range of disciplines. This gives you the chance to build your intercultural awareness in other areas of the arts, humanities, social sciences and beyond.\n\nYour final two years will be your honours years. You will spend Year 3 studying abroad, gaining lived experience of Chinese and East Asian culture.
