"summary": "At the core of MA (Master of Arts) Classical Archaeology and Ancient History is the study of classical civilisations' history and material culture.\n\nThe programme requires the careful interpretation of a limited amount of complex written and material evidence to understand ancient civilisations and their continued importance in the modern era.\n\nYou will develop a range of disciplinary skills used by historians, archaeologists and art historians.\n\n**Civilisations you will study**\n\nYou will study the Greek and Roman civilisations from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity and Byzantium.\n\nYou will also have the opportunity to study other ancient peoples and civilisations such as:\n\n\n* the Etruscans\n\n\n* the Persians\n\n\n* the Carthaginians\n\n\nYou will gain an understanding of Graeco-Roman society within its geographical context.\n\nYou will analyse and evaluate a range of:\n\n\n* texts\n\n\n* works of art\n\n\n* artefacts\n\n\n* archaeological sites\n\n\n* other material evidence\n\n\n**Practical skills and excavation**\n\nThis programme will challenge you to confront the differing pictures of the classical world given by the textual and material evidence. This will offer you an intellectually demanding and intrinsically interesting experience.\n\nYou will also have opportunities to gain practical skills in excavation.
