Students will develop a deep understanding of automated \nsystem design, integration, and control, while considering efficiency, \nsustainability, and Industry 4.0 principles. \nStudents will explore the evolution and fundamentals of robotics and \nautomation, system architecture and integration of sensors, actuators, \nand controllers, control strategies for robotic and automated systems, \nindustrial applications: assembly lines, material handling, and flexible \nmanufacturing, emerging technologies: IoT, cyber-physical systems, and \nsmart factories, safety, standards, and ethical considerations in \nautomation \n\n2. **Power Transmission with Electromechanics** \n\nThis module provides students with an in-depth understanding of the \nprinciples, analysis, and design of power transmission and \nelectromechanical systems commonly used in engineering practice. It \naims to develop the ability to evaluate and integrate mechanical and \nelectrical transmission components to achieve efficient and reliable power \nflow in modern engineering applications. \nStudents will study traditional mechanical transmission systems such as \nbelts, chains, gears, shafts, and couplings; alongside electromechanical \nsystems that include motors, generators, and actuators. Emphasis is \nplaced on analysing system efficiency, modelling performance \ncharacteristics, and applying computational tools to simulate torque, \nspeed, and power relationships. \nThe module encourages critical thinking in system selection and design, \nenabling students to assess trade-offs between mechanical and electrical \ntransmission options in terms of performance, cost, and sustainability\n\n3. **Digital and Embedded Systems ** \n\nThis module will develop skills required to design and implement complex \nembedded systems using assembly and C Programming languages. It will \ninclude hardware considerations for real-time embedded systems, \ndebugging procedures and advanced use of C for real-time embedded \nsystem design. \nThe module will discuss digital logic design, programmable logic devices, \nembedded system and will cover the basic architecture of microcontrollers \nalong with their applications in embedded systems. \nStudents will gain practical experience of interfacing computer \nprogrammes with physical engineering systems and will also gain skills in \ndesigning small systems to meet various design requirements. \n\n4. **Control Systems, Design and Analysis ** \n\nThis module studies complex control and automation systems used in \nmodern manufacturing, design and energy production and distribution. It \nis designed to provide students with the necessary analytical and \nmodelling skills to mathematically investigate, design, test and verify \ncontrol systems for automation. \n \nStudents will develop an understanding of the Fundamentals of control \nsystems and automation, explore mathematical modelling of multi\nfeedback sensor-process-actuator systems, apply laplace transforms and \ntraditional techniques for system analysis. \nStudents will progress on to design and verification of advanced control \nsystems from specifications. \n\n5. **Major Project** \n\nIn the final year of your degree, you will complete your Major Project. The \naim of the dissertation is for students to formulate and produce a \nsubstantial piece of independent research into an area of an engineering \nissue/problem of their choosing. It will develop and consolidate research \nskills, academic writing skills and synthesise knowledge and \nunderstanding gained throughout the degree. \nYou will be supported by a Major Project Supervisor who will be one of \nyour module leaders from the course team.",
