Foundation year modules include:\nFundamental Pure Mathematics\nFundamental Applied Mathematics\nElectrical and Electronic Engineering. Fundamentals\nMechanical Engineering Fundamentals\n\nSuccessful completion of the foundation year will see you progress to the first year of the degree course. In the first year, the curriculum is shared across related courses allowing you to gain a broad grounding in the discipline before going on, in the second and third years, to specialist modules in your chosen field. \n\nWe want your degree to fit around you, so upon successful completion of your first year, you could swap degrees with another course in your common first year (subject to meeting progression requirements). \n\nModules\nMechanical Science \nManufacturing Technology and Materials \nEngineering Design \nEngineering Application \nEngineering Mathematics\nElectrical and Electronic Engineering Principles \n\nYear Two\nIn year two, you will develop more advanced knowledge and skills to do with design and sustainability, thermofluid mechanics, and analytical modelling, amongst others. \n\nModules\nVehicle Systems and Development \nSolid Mechanics and Dynamics \nThermofluid Mechanics \nAnalytical Modelling \nEngineering Management \nDesign and Sustainability \n\nPlacement Year\nThere’s no better way to find out what you love doing than trying it out for yourself, which is why a work placement* can often be beneficial. Work placements usually occur between your second and final year of study. They’re a great way to help you explore your potential career path and gain valuable work experience, whilst developing transferable skills for the future.\n\nIf you choose to do a work placement year, you will pay a reduced tuition fee* of £1,250. For more information, please go to the fees and funding section. During this time, you will receive guidance from your employer or partner institution, along with your assigned academic mentor who will ensure you have the support you need to complete your placement.\n\nFinal Year\nYour final year aims to bring you to the level to enter the world of work by consolidating your knowledge and skills from year one and two. They’re a great way to help you explore your potential career path and gain valuable work experience, whilst developing transferable skills for the future.\n\nIf you choose to do a work placement year, you will pay a reduced tuition fee* of £1,250. The degree with foundation year is only available for the BEng option.\n\n**Foundation Year**\nThis foundation year aims to provide you with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed in mathematics, as well as the theories and concepts of electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering.\n\n**Degree**\nMotorsport engineers are involved in every aspect of vehicle design, manufacture and testing. This course is designed to give you a grounding in these areas and other facets of automotive engineering, supported by a strong foundation in core engineering principles. \n\n\n- **Industry-aligned learning: **live projects, Formula Student and collaborations with motorsport teams develop practical expertise in aerodynamics, materials and vehicle systems. \n\n\n- **Design to manufacturing and beyond**: ideal for aspiring motorsport engineers seeking hands-on experience in high-performance vehicle design, testing and innovation. \n\n\n- **Career versatility:** combines motorsport specialisation with mechanical engineering fundamentals, opening doors to automotive, R&D and performance engineering roles. \n\n\n**Why you should study this course** \n\n**Foundation year**\n- Supports you to gain the academic skills required for degree-level study.\n\n\n- Provides a grounding in key areas of engineering and mathematics.\n\n\n**Degree**\n**Industry-ready skills through live projects** \nGain hands-on experience with real-world motorsport challenges, including the IMechE Formula Student competition, where you’ll design, build and test a race car under professional constraints. Competing against university teams from the UK and internationally. \n\n**Race Ready facilities and software** \nTrain in our Mercedes-AMG wind tunnel, 6DoF driving simulator, engine/chassis dynamometers, VR Power Wall, Rapid Prototyping facility and composites labs to build and test vehicles mirroring professional motorsport engineers.\n\n**Optional industrial placements and global experiences** \nBoost employability with a year in industry or study abroad, supported by our award-winning placements team. Past students have worked with race teams and automotive firms.
