"summary": "The Masters examines the economic, managerial, legal and cultural frameworks within which media organisations and industries operate. If you are an aspiring or existing media manager or have a strong interest in acquiring analytical perspectives on sectors including television, print publishing and film, this programme is designed for you. We offer a rich and unique combination of advanced-level media and management studies, with a particular focus on media economics and media and cultural policy. While aimed at enhancing your knowledge and career opportunities, this is an advanced academic programme and does not include internships or work placements.\n\n**WHY THIS PROGRAMME**\n\n\n- In recent years, we have had speakers from the BBC, Channel 4, the Financial Times, the UK communications regulator Ofcom, Reach plc, The Sunday Herald, the Press Complaints Commission and the British Film Institute.\n\n\n- You have the opportunity to pursue your own special interests through elective courses and supervised individual research within a dedicated and well-resourced postgraduate teaching and research centre.\n\n\n- The programme is led by an international expert in media economics. You will be taught by academics from the University’s Centre for Cultural Policy Research, Adam Smith Business School and School of Law, and experienced industry figures will give presentations.\n\n\n**PROGRAMME STRUCTURE**\n\nMedia management involves a taught course, which will run from September to April, followed by an individual dissertation.\n\nThe taught component involves a combination of lectures, seminars and group-work sessions as well as regular presentations from senior and experienced figures in the media industry. You will be taught by specialist staff from the Centre for Cultural Policy Research and the Adam Smith Business School.\n\nAssessment is based primarily on individual written essays and assignments but also involves group-work projects, presentations and an examined element.\n\n**Semester 1**\nIn semester one, you will complete four compulsory core courses, totalling 60 credits.\n\n**Core Courses**\nMedia Economics\nResearch Methods 1 (CCPR)\nManaging Strategic Change (ASBS)\nMarketing Management (ASBS) \n\n**Semester 2**\nIn semester two, you will complete two compulsory core courses totalling 40 credits, and one or two optional courses totalling 20 credits. \n\n**Core Courses**\nResearch Methods 2 (CCPR)\nMedia & Cultural Policy\n\n**Optional Courses**\nIssues In Audience Management\nIntellectual Property Law\nDigital Marketing Strategy\nInternationalisation of SMEs\nManaging Diversity In Organisations\nCultural Cities and Creative Regions\nCultural Institutions\n\n**Dissertation**\nAt the end of semester two, you will produce a substantial piece of writing of around 12,000 words, presenting original research on a topic relevant to management of media, to be submitted in early August.\n\n**CAREER PROSPECTS**\n\nCourse subjects will help prepare you for a range of management careers across the media sector, including in economics, business strategy, media policy, intellectual property rights and marketing. \nAt the same time, the programme offers an academically engaging and rewarding experience allowing you to embark on policy advisory and consultancy roles or to pursue further postgraduate studies.\nPositions held by recent graduates include Scottish Affairs Officer, Manager Internal Communications, Product Manager, Press Officer, Broadcasting Manager and Creative Director.",
