"summary": "This Masters offers a combination of technical and historical courses across a broad geographic, chronological and thematic range taught by leading experts who often work closely with the outstanding medieval collections of the university’s library, museum and archives.\n\n**WHY THIS PROGRAMME**\nOne of the world's top universities for History - ranked 49th in the QS World Rankings by Subject.\n\n\n- Whether you intend further study after your Masters or are simply looking to engage more deeply with medieval history you will benefit from becoming a member of an active and welcoming postgraduate and staff research community with a regular seminar series and postgraduate reading groups.\n\n\n- You will have the opportunity to work one-to-one with medieval history staff who are experts in their fields.\n\n\n- You’ll take one core research training course with other History students and will choose five optional courses and undertake a dissertation. Your optional courses can include language and technical training.\n\n\n- You will have the opportunity to undertake language, palaeography and manuscript work practice.\n\n\n- Our programme has strong links with the university's Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery and library special collections and archives, giving you access to primary source material including an enormous collection of coins, books, manuscripts and ethnography. \n\n\n**PROGRAMME STRUCTURE**\n\nYou will take:\n- One core course\n\n\n- Five optional courses (which can include languages, such as Latin, and courses in other subjects, with the permission of the programme convenor. They may also include a ‘special topic’, an extended essay grounded in one-to-one supervision).\n\n\nYou will also produce a dissertation.\n\n**Core Course**\nDoing History: Sources and Skills for Historians\n\n**Optional Courses**\nCourses in Medieval History include:\nMedieval Palaeography: An Introduction to Reading Medieval Documents \nThe World of the Crusades: Critical Approaches to Medieval Sources\nCrusading Warfare in the Eastern Mediterranean, 1096-1291\nWomen and Power in Renaissance Italy\n\nOther History courses available to you include:\nMilitary Scotland in the Age of Proto-globalization, c.1600-c.1800\nGender, Politics And Power\nGender, Culture and Text\nWorking with Manuscripts as Historians\nThe Medievalists: the Middle Ages in 20th century Eastern and Central Europe\n\nPlease note the availability of a particular course depends on student numbers and patterns of staff leave. Not all courses will be available every year.\n\n**Summer: April to September**\nDissertation (MSc History)\n\n**CAREER PROSPECTS**\n\nThe research skills and methods you’ll gain on this programme give you the transferable skills you need for positions in the public and private sectors, including heritage policy and projects, media and teaching.\n\nThe programme is also a good foundation for a PhD.",
