"assessmentMethods": "Thesis / Dissertation\nThe PhD culminates in the production of a thesis submitted after three or four years of full-time study or five to seven years of part-time study. A PhD thesis in Philosophy must not be more than 80,000 words, including appendices and footnotes, but must exclude a bibliography.\n\nOther\nAn oral examination (viva) will be conducted on the subject of the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.",
"entryRequirements": "Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK Masters (Merit).\n\nIf your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find the equivalent in your country.\n\nThe candidate's undergraduate degree must include the equivalent of two years of full-time study in Philosophy (10 full courses in the US system). We normally expect a first-class degree or the international equivalent, but a candidate may also apply if they have graduated with a good upper second-class degree (at least 67%) or the equivalent (US GPA at least 3.6/4), provided that other aspects of their application (such as dissertation marks) show a strong aptitude for further work in philosophy.\n\nThe applicant must also have or expect to obtain a Master's degree at or close to Distinction level in Philosophy or a cognate discipline directly relevant to their proposed philosophical research.",

"summary": "The PhD course offers close supervision and extensive training and is the standard entrance to the academic profession. The Faculty welcomes applications for this degree in a wide range of philosophical areas. The PhD culminates in the production of a thesis of up to 80,000 words to be submitted between three and four years from the commencement of study for full-time study. The PhD may also be done part-time, in which case the deadline for completion will be a minimum of five and a maximum of seven years. An oral examination will be conducted on the subject of the thesis and the general field of knowledge within which it falls.\n\nThe PhD degree is awarded for an extended thesis that makes a substantial original contribution to learning.\n\nContinuing\nCandidates currently studying for the MPhil in Philosophy are welcome to apply while at Cambridge to continue to the PhD.
