"summary": "A Masters by Research (MScR) programme is ideal if you would like to complete a short piece of independent research in Russian studies. The programme is a good stepping-stone to a PhD, but is equally of value as a stand-alone qualification.\n\nAn MScR programme is likely to suit you if:\n\n\n* you have a clear idea what you would like to write your masters dissertation about, right from the beginning of the programme\n\n\n* you would like to be part of a large and supportive postgraduate community, while working independently \n\n\nOn this programme:\n\n\n* you will take courses in research skills and methods\n\n\n* you will complete two research assignments, each of 6,000 words\n\n\n* you will write a 15,000 word dissertation under the guidance of an experienced and well-published supervisor\n\n\nThe first lecture in Russian Studies was given at the University of Edinburgh in 1919, and Russian Studies was introduced as a degree programme in 1949.
