"assessmentMethods": "- Thesis\n- Viva Voce\n\n**Assessment description**\nThe MPhil programme combines taught research training and applied research practice. Candidates join the Department as a member of the Research Centre in which they initially have a broad research interest and that will have overseen their acceptance into the Department.\n\nCandidates are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject, which must then be written up as a substantial thesis.\n\nThe final stage of the MPhil programme is the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a Board of Examiners.",

"summary": "Our research activities cover fundamental investigations to applied research. Many of these activities are in conjunction with industry and other universities.\n\nJoin a department with a strong ethos to proactively better the world through taking mechanical engineering research and development to the next level. Our research activities cover fundamental investigations to applied research, and are often carried out collaboratively with industry and other universities.\n\nYour PhD can be in any of the areas of research covered by our research centres:\n\n\n- Centre for Bioengineering & Biomedical Technologies\n\n\n- Centre for Climate Adaptation & Environment Research (CAER)\n\n\n- Centre for Digital, Manufacturing & Design (DMADE)\n\n\n- Centre for Integrated Materials, Processes & Structures (IMPS)\n\n\n- Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems (SES)\n\n\n- Institute for Propulsion & Mobility (IPM)\n\n\nYou will start this programme in October.\nYou may also start mid-year, subject to agreement with your supervisor and the Doctoral College.\n\n**Programme content**\n**Learning**\n- Doctoral skills online\n\n\n- Doctoral skills workshop\n\n\n- Research project\n\n\n- Supervisory team\n\n\n**Research content**\nSuccessful applicants are welcomed very much as junior academic colleagues rather than students, and are expected to play a full and professional role in contributing to the Department’s objective of international academic excellence.\n\nIn many cases postgraduate projects are linked to industrial companies and are often carried out in collaboration with other departments within the University and other institutions.
