"summary": "**1st in the world for research impact in Physics (Shanghai Ranking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025)**\n**7th in the UK for our research environment in Physics in REF 2021 (Times Higher Education)**\n\nWhether you’re an engineer with an interest in quantum computing, a physicist with a passion for practical technologies, or a mathematician with an aptitude for experimental work, this PhD is the next step to a successful career in quantum technologies in areas such as:\n\n\n- practical quantum computers\n\n\n- quantum algorithms and quantum error correction\n\n\n- quantum networks\n\n\n- quantum sensors\n\n\n- the modelling power of quantum simulators.\n\n\nQuantum technology is one of the UK Government’s five key strategic priorities. Graduates from this course could be in high-demand for well-paid and interesting jobs that make meaningful contributions to society.\n\nThis four-year degree has been designed by leading academics and industry partners. It includes a broad range of taught modules at the University of Sussex and the University of Bristol in Year 1, followed by the research project phase in Years 2-4. You’ll have access to a broad technology base and state-of-the-art facilities at Sussex and Bristol.\n\nAs a postgraduate researcher, you’ll learn from world-leading academics, industrial collaborators and your peers. You’ll:\n\n\n- gain experience of practical application as well as a sound theoretical understanding of quantum physics\n\n\n- develop complementary skills – such as commercialisation and science communication – necessary for academic and industrial excellence\n\n\n- have the option of going on industry trips to visit companies and research laboratories working in the quantum field\n\n\n- have financial support for academic and industrial secondments, as well as international and national conferences.\n\n\nWe understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision.
