Modern Languages and Cultures accepts students for a research degree leading to a PhD of the University of London. Applicants for this degree are accepted on the basis of previous academic performance and subject to the availability of a member of staff to supervise their work. We welcome applications from home and overseas students. All prospective students are advised to consult a potential supervisor with a draft research proposal before submitting a formal application. You should also include a relevant piece of written work showing your potential for carrying out high-level research in your subject area (preferably a final-year undergraduate or MA dissertation), with your application.",

"summary": "Research in Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) contributed fully to QMUL’s strong performance in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (the latest in the series of national evaluations of research in UK universities), as part of Modern Languages and Linguistics (UoA 28B: 3.04 GPA score).\n\nMLC hosts or contributes to a number of flourishing Centres:\n\nCentre for Anglo-German Cultural Relations (directed by Professor Rüdiger Görner), which also runs the ‘Writers-in-Residence’ programme\nCentre for Catalan Studies (directed by Professor John London)\nCentre for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies (co-directed by Dr. Rosa Vidal Doval)\nCentre for the History of Emotions (co-directed by Dr. Elena Carrera)\nCentre for the Study of Migration (formerly directed by Professor Parvati Nair)\nCentre for Poetry (co-directed by Professor Omar Garcia)\nWe also have strong connections with external research centres, groups and institutions, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Leo Baeck Institute, the Ramon Llull Institut (Catalan Studies), the Camões Institute for Cooperation and Language, and the University of London’s Institute of Modern Languages Research.\n\nMany of the research staff in MLC have held leadership roles in professional organizations associations, notably Professor Adrian Armstrong’s role as President of the Association of University Professors and Heads of French (2014-17).
