You will develop a strong foundation in geoscience before advancing your skills in research, data analysis, geophysical and hazard modelling. Through fieldwork and specialist study, you will gain the high-level technical and analytical ability to pursue PhD study or careers in geoscience and hazard management.\n\nOur Geology (Volcanology) specialised pathway provides a strong foundation in core geoscience principles while offering the opportunity to develop advanced knowledge and master’s-level skills in the study of volcanoes and their impact on the planet.\n\nFrom geological structures and Earth's major systems to the history of life and evolution, year one equips you with a strong foundation of knowledge.\n\nYou'll apply your learning using digital tools to analyse and visualise geological and geophysical data, while getting to grips with programming for geoscientists. Building on this, you will explore core topics such as field skills, igneous and metamorphic rocks, and the processes and landforms shaped by volcanic activity. By your third year, you can tailor your studies towards volcanology, while completing an independent research project in your chosen specialism.\n\nYour fourth year is designed to advance your research skills, from critically evaluating scientific literature to designing and carrying out an independent study in volcanology.
