"summary": "Our MSc Human Geography: Critical Research Encounters engages at an advanced level with conceptual debates in human geography, cutting edge methodological approaches, and the skills needed to communicate geographical ideas beyond the academy. The course will equip you with the knowledge and skills appropriate to undertake independent research in human geography. Research skills fostered and developed through the course can also be used in a range of contexts, including the public sector, NGOs, trade unions and research consultancies.\n\n**WHY THIS PROGRAMME**\n\n\n- The work of the teaching team is at the forefront of debates in critical geographies with particular expertise in environmental geographies, cultural, historical, political and social geography.\n\n\n- This programme will equip you with independent research skills which will be transferable to careers in research in public, private and voluntary sectors.\n\n\n- The programme has a strong track record of preparing students for doctoral research in Human Geography.\n\n\n- The teaching team includes editors of leading journals in geography, including Antipode, GeoHumanities and Urban Studies.\n\n\n- The programme draws on the teaching staff’s extensive experience of working beyond the academy in collaborations with a diverse range of organisations in both the global North and South.\n\n\n- You will be encouraged to engage in significant critical depth with specific theories and literatures and supported to develop your own critical perspectives. \n\n\n- You will develop your own individual research project in the form of a dissertation supported by expert supervision.\n\n\n- Masters students are part of the broader human geography related activity, including regular Human Geography Research Group meetings.\n\n\n- The School of Geographical and Earth Sciences has an Athena Swan Silver Award, demonstrating the school’s commitment to supporting women in scientific studies and careers, and to improving the working environment for all.\n\n\n- 97% of our research has been evaluated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the latest Research Excellence Framework [2021]\n\n\n**PROGRAMME STRUCTURE**\n\nModes of delivery include lectures, seminars and tutorials and allow students the opportunity to take part in workshops, project and team work.\n\n**Core Courses**\nCritical Concepts in Human Geography (20 Credits)\nCritical Concepts in Practice (20 Credits)\nQualitative Research Methods (20 Credits)\nQuantitative Data Analysis (20 Credits)\nGES Masters Research Project (60 Credits)\n\n**Option Courses**\nGraduate Futures Work Placement (20 Credits)\nIntroduction to GIS (10 Credits)\nIntroduction to Statistics for Environmental Analysis (10 Credits)\nAcademic and Professional Skills (10 Credits)\n\n**CAREER PROSPECTS**\n\nRecent graduates have been employed in a range of roles, including consultancy positions for major firms such as Mott Macdonald, user researchers and policy analysts in the Scottish and UK Government, and policy and research-facing roles in the third sector and NGOs.
